Explosion, not a human error, caused the crash of Polish president’s plane

A commission investigating the fatal crash of the Polish president’s plane in 2010 said on Wednesday that the jet’s left wing was destroyed as a result of an explosion on board. The explosion had “several sources” on the plane.

The commission was set up by Poland’s conservative governing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which came to power in 2015.

The party, headed by President Lech Kaczyński's twin brother, Jarosław Kaczyński, has long challenged an official report which cited a number of pilot errors on the Polish side, and some errors made by Russian staff at the control tower. It was suggested on several occasions that the presidential plane crashed due to sabotage and/or bomb on board. The suspicions are fueled by the Russians' refusal to return the plane's wreckage.
