“The German chancellor worked under tremendous pressure to prevent the veto of the EU budget for 2021-27 and the Covid-19 reconstruction fund. However, the compromise she has reached with Hungary and Poland is one of the worst that could be,” - George Soros assessed the results of the European Council summit in Brussels.
“The European Union has faced an existential crisis, and already EU leadership responds with a compromise that seems to reflect the belief that this threat can simply be rejected,” - wrote Soros.
“As I write this article, it seems clear that Merkel has negotiated a compromise with Orban and Poland, and de facto its leader, Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński. However, an agreement concluded with two rebellious countries means the worst possible thing” - he wrote.
“First, the declaration changes the content and intention of the regulation text that was agreed by the EU institutions on November 5, significantly weakening the conditionality of the rule of law. […] Secondly, some provisions in the agreement will serve to postpone for two years the implementation of the conditionality of the rule of law.”
