Dramatic level of knowledge about the Holocaust among Germans

According to research conducted in Germany, German society is unaware that half of the murdered Jews were Polish citizens. Germans also do not know much about Polish victims of Nazism.

One in nine young Germans had not heard about the Holocaust at all, and one in four could not name even a single German concentration camp. These are the results of a survey commissioned by the Claims Conference, and reported by, among others, "The Times".

When asked where the Jews murdered in the Holocaust came from, 60 percent respondents answered in the IPSOS survey that they were German Jews. In fact, 1/3 of the 160,000 people died in the Holocaust. German Jews, and half of all Jewish victims of the war were Jews from Poland.

The Germans also do not know the conditions in which Polish Jews died. Although people have an idea that the war was bad, they do not realize that the occupation claimed the greatest number of victims and brought terror and crimes against civilians.
