The above question is rhetorical because the EU does not only know about the government’s totalitarian excesses in Poland; they encourage it.
The US is not saying it out loud yet. Still, its government, specifically Vice President JD Vance, is already expressing displeasure, leaving room for them to start behaving like a democracy.
Enter the American Spectator. On March 13, it published a piece by Micheal O'Shea titled "Poland Continues to Arrest Political Opponents; The Tusk government’s totalitarian excesses warrant international attention."
The first paragraph tells us exactly what the US government thinks about Poland and Europe as a whole.
During his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Vice President JD Vance summarized a European totalitarian impulse that has been festering for years but has only recently become prominent in American political discourse.
However, the European Union is an entirely different story. No normal person should understand why they close their eyes to what is going on. Right across the border, there are two totalitarian regimes, Russia and Belarus, and Poland is now closer to their model of "democracy" than that of France. It is hard not to notice that the EU and Germany encourage that behaviour.
