The Sejm has declared July 11 as the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Genocide in Volhynia

Today, the Sejm passed an act establishing July 11 as the National Day of Remembrance of Poles – Victims of Genocide committed by the OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic.

The decision of the Sejm was criticized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, stating that Poland's designation of July 11 as the day of remembrance of the victims of "genocide committed by the OUN and UPA in the eastern territories of the Second Polish Republic" is contrary to the spirit of good-neighborly relations between countries.

"Such unilateral steps do not contribute to achieving mutual understanding and reconciliation, which our countries have been working on for a long time, in particular in the format of the Joint Ukrainian-Polish Historical Dialogue Group, which operates with the participation of the ministries of culture and institutes of national memory of both countries," the statement reads.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that Ukraine "continues to support scientific, impartial study of the complex aspects of our common history." According to Kyiv, "the path to true reconciliation leads through dialogue, mutual respect and joint work of historians, and not through one-sided political assessments."
