This story is so bizarre that it provides the only explanation for what the Polish Prime Minister wants to do.
During a press conference with Friedrich Merz in Berlin, Donald Tusk said that approximately 50,000 people who suffered during the war were alive today. He added that when he discussed reparations with former Chancellor Olaf Scholz in recent years, the figure was around 60,000. "Hurry up if you really want to make such a gesture," the Polish prime minister told the German side.
That sounded like the PM Tusk finally decided to tell Germany to pay reparations at least to those who suffered the most, but then he indicated that if there is no quick and clear declaration from Germany, he will consider next year a decision that Poland will meet this need from its own funds.
The President of Poland commented in the social media on this "brilliant" idea:
"Poles were attacked and murdered by the Germans, so reparations are due from the Germans. It is contrary to historical truth, contrary to logic, contrary to any values that a nation that suffered persecution should then have to pay for this sacrifice."
"Donald Tusk's proposal to the German Chancellor regarding compensation for World War II is a disgrace and a slap in the face" - commented Dr. Eng. Col. Leonard Kapiszewski, president of the Federation of Associations of Veterans.
It's possible that Tusk tried to shame Germans into doing something, but he jest shamed himself and Poland.
