Daily News: Vandals trashed a statue of a revered Polish Catholic priest in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park, police said Wednesday.

Garbage was strewn around the statue of murdered freedom fighter Father Jerzy Popiełuszko near the corner of Nassau and Bedford Aves. and the words “No Polish” were scrawled on the stone, cops said.

Niezalezna.pl: The incident aroused the anger of the Polish American community. Adrian Kubicki, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York, hopes that the New York police will draw conclusions from this event and make the monument better protected.

Jerzy Popiełuszko is not only a priest and blessed of the Catholic Church, but also a freedom fighter. A figure without which it would be impossible to defeat communism in Poland. New Yorkers perfectly understand these values, so we hope that monitoring will be installed in the place where the monument stands - said Kubicki.
