Despite huge penalties Poland will not close the Turów mine

Due to the continuation of lignite mining in the Turów mine, Poland was ordered by the Court of Justice of the European Union to pay the European Commission a periodic penalty payment in the amount of PLN 500,000. euro a day.

The government spokesman announced on Monday that the Polish government would not close the KWB Turów mine.

The Polish government will not close the Turów mine; the suspension of its work will threaten the stability of the Polish power system; the financial penalty referred to by the CJEU is disproportionate to the situation and is not justified in the actual state - said the government's spokesman, Piotr Müller.

From the beginning, we were of the opinion that the suspension of the works of the mine in Turów would threaten the stability of the Polish power system. This would have negative consequences for energy security for millions of Poles and, more broadly, for the entire European Union - he said.

He also assured that the Polish government was seeking an amicable settlement to the dispute with the Czech Republic and that it respected the interests of the local community. As stated by Müller, today's decision is in opposition to the amicable settlement of the matter.

Moreover, he pointed out that any decisions of the Court of Justice of the EU may not infringe upon areas related to the basic security of the member states. Energy security, he added, belongs to this area.

Müller also stated that "the financial penalty referred to by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) is disproportionate to the situation and is not factually justified". It undermines the ongoing process of an amicable settlement, he added.

BTW, next to the Turów complex there is a five times larger mine complex in the Czech Republic and ten times larger in Germany. Somehow the other two are not being closed. Justice anyone?
