Polish doctors performed a medical examination of President Saakashvili

At my request, a team of Polish doctors from the Humanitarian and Medical Aid Team performed a comprehensive medical examination of President Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia, - Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Twitter.

Saakashvili, president of Georgia from 2004 to 2013 and governor of Ukraine's Odesa region in 2015-16, is serving a six-year prison sentence for abuse of power as head of state. The former leader and his supporters see the punishment as politically motivated.

Saakashvili was imprisoned in October 2021 and subsequently led several hunger strikes there. At the end of 2021, he was taken to the hospital. According to many Georgian and Western human rights activists, the former president's health condition is serious enough to threaten his life.

In early July, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to the Georgian authorities to hand over Mykhailo Saakashvili, who now poses Ukrainian citizenship, to Ukraine to provide him with the necessary treatment and care.

Polish doctors are to determine whether the former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is serving a prison sentence, is receiving appropriate treatment, the Georgian portal Civil.ge wrote on Wednesday.
