Niezalezna(.)pl: "In 2008, we were thrown to the wolves. Despite the heroic efforts of President Lech Kaczyński and the Polish delegation, who argued until the last moment about the need to give us the Membership Action Plan (MAP) at the NATO summit in Bucharest. The German position was the main obstacle" - recalled former president Mikheil Saakashvili, who is in prison in his country.
He pointed out that Germany's objection was justified by the unresolved territorial conflict in Georgia. As he revealed, in February 2008, before his official visit to the White House, he received a phone call from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was to say directly that "no matter what the Americans say, Germany will block the granting of MAP to Georgia."
The former Georgian president recalled that "only thanks to the heroism of Georgian soldiers and the courage of President Kaczyński, who brought five leaders to Tbilisi risking their lives, Georgia was saved."
