Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, on behalf of the Polish government, declared assistance to Slovenia affected by the floods. Today, the first transport with humanitarian aid for Slovenia and rescuers will leave Poland.
At least three people have died due to storms and catastrophic floods in Slovenia. Several towns were underwater. Overnight, a levee on the Mura River near Dolnja Bistrica in eastern Slovenia was breached, and ten villages were evacuated. According to civil defense commander Srecko Sestan, the situation is getting worse as the breach in the embankment keeps getting bigger, and the engineering services cannot close it. Dropping concrete blocks from helicopters is being considered, but such actions are prevented by weather conditions.
The Mura River, which flows through southern Austria and eastern Slovenia, currently has the second-highest water level in history; in Austria, the water level is still rising, writes the press agency STA. According to hydrologists quoted by the agency, the situation is difficult to predict.
