German President Frank Walter Steinmeier took part in the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. In yesterday's speech, he asked for forgiveness, but some of the event participants shouted "reparations."
President Steinmeier did not bring to Warsaw anything specific with him, such as promises of financial help for survivors, wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). In turn, 'Die Welt' emphasized that "this year's celebration of the uprising was characterized by a lack of redress on the German side."
"Die Welt" defends the attitude of Steinmeier, who was criticized by the Polish and German media for the lack of specific information about compensation for the last living victims of National Socialism in Poland. “However, Steinmeier did not go to Poland with a promise of reparations. This would be the task of the German government," - it was emphasized.
"Nevertheless, this year's celebration of the uprising was characterized by a lack of redress on the German side." – added Die Welt.
The anniversary of Warsaw Uprising is still very emotional for many Poles. This morning we learned that today, August 1st, the oldest participant of the Uprising has passed away. Barbara Sowa alias "Basia" was 106 years old.
