Persecution of Father Olszewski: a future of "rule of law"

Yesterday, the supporters of Father Olszewski had a quick glimpse of him on the way to the courtroom. Those who know him claim that he lost 30 to 40 pounds. His eyes had visible problems adjusting to the light, making him look like he was crying.

A 163 days long detention is much longer than detention of those who await trial for much worse crimes that he supposedly committed. His crime? He supposedly unfairly received government's subsidy for charitable activities.

The government seems to have a problem collecting evidence against him. They had 6 months with no visible results, so they are trying to coerce a confession from him by mistreatment. They are also denying any contact with the Church figures.

The current Polish government is turning towards old communist era tactics, and the silence of the European institutions is especially troubling.
