The EU-Mercosur agreement threatens Polish agriculture

Farmers in the European Union oppose the EU-Mercosur agreement. Mercosur is an organization that brings Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay together.

The leader of the 'Law and Justice' (PiS) party explained that the bilateral agreement, which will open the doors of exports from South America to the European Union, also threatens Polish agriculture.

“This is the first step towards a situation that will greatly threaten Polish agriculture. (…) We will then reach a situation where Polish agriculture will not only be at risk, but even in a state of collapse,” said Jarosław Kaczyński during a press conference.

Kaczyński noted that importing grain from the East posed a similar threat to the domestic industry. He added that the restrictions introduced by the PiS government have been lifted, but the matter should be settled with the Ukrainian side after the war on its territory ends.

France is trying to persuade Poland to jointly block the EU's trade agreement with the Mercosur.

On Wednesday, farmers protested in Brussels, and the European Parliament building with the inscription "democracy in action" was surrounded by barriers and fences. European farmers must cope with the EU Green Deal and the inflow of agricultural products from Ukraine.
