The presidential elections in Poland will take place on May 18

Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia announced on Wednesday afternoon that the presidential elections would be held on May 18. Hołownia informed that several May dates were considered and finally, after consulting the chairman of the National Electoral Commission, he chose May 18. The Marshal added that this means a possible second round on June 1, 2025.

"District Electoral Commissions should be established by March 31, and it will be possible to nominate presidential candidates by April 4 at 4 p.m."

Only after the decision of the Speaker of the Sejm to order elections is published in the Journal of Laws will the election campaign formally begin.

Then, in order to nominate a candidate for president, it will be necessary to create an election committee. Presidential elections differ from other elections in that electoral committees can only be created by voters, and not by political parties or their coalitions; all committees are established the same and all are subject to the same campaign finance rules.

The National Electoral Commission decides on the registration of the electoral committee and then the presidential candidate. To register a candidate, it is necessary to collect at least PLN 100,000 signatures in support of him. If registration is refused, the committee has two days to file a complaint to the Supreme Court, and the court has another two days to consider it. There is no appeal against the Supreme Court's ruling. The president is elected for a five-year term and can be re-elected only once. A Polish citizen who turns 35 on election day at the latest can become president.
