Donald Tusk failed to commemorate the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising on August 1st, the anniversary of that tragic episode of Polish history. The Polish prime minister did not attend any of the ceremonies, did not lay flowers, and did not even tweet. (He is one of the most active X users in Polish politics, usually when he attacks the President of the Polish Republic.)
"How can we describe this attitude toward matters most important to Poland? What can we expect from a man whose first initiatives after taking power were to waive war reparations from Germany?" - wrote journalist Marzena Nykiel in her commentary on the wPolityce website.
The commemorations of the 81st anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising are now in their third day. Donald Tusk was absent from yesterday's Mass in Krasiński Square, nor from today's Mass at Powązki Cemetery, in front of the Polish Underground State Monument, on Filtrowa Street, or Karolkowa Street. The Polish Prime Minister did not stand alongside the last heroes of those days, who, despite their advanced age, still carry the memory of the Uprising, the German occupation, and German crimes.
Poland still suffers the consequences of the German invasion and occupation. They murdered over 5.2 million Poles, approximately 15 percent of Poland's population at the time. Poland is still grappling with the demographic consequences.
