Schroeder asks about democracy in Poland. US Ambassador, Mosbacher, replies

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder doubts the state of democracy in Poland. The country was defended by the US ambassador Georgette Mosbacher.

Schroeder gave an interview to "Der Spiegel." He criticizes the USA, defends Russia, and asks whether Poland and Hungary are still democracies or are already authoritarian states. The pretext for publishing the interview is the book "Last Chance. Why a New World Architecture" by Schroeder and historian Gregor Schoellgen.

- Please look at Poland and Hungary. Are these still democracies, or are they more and more authoritarian states? Where are the values in foreign policy? The CDU and CSU are not even able to say goodbye to the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Still, they cooperate with it in the European Parliament - said Schroeder.

Georgette Mosbacher, the US ambassador in Poland, reacted to the words of the former German chancellor about Poland. "I disagree. Poland has free and fair elections, independent media, freedom to protest without exposure to persecution and a thriving middle class. What part of that is not democracy?" - Mosbacher wrote on Twitter.
