Warsaw Uprising Calendar: September 8th and 9th - Evacuation of 8,000 civilians

September 8th

The shelling of Śródmieście continued throughout the day, but it was interrupted between 12.00 and 14.00 for the duration of the evacuation of civilians to the part of the city occupied by the Germans. The evacuation was to include the elderly, women, children, and the sick. 5,000 people were evacuated.

September 9th

The second part of the evacuation of civilians from Warsaw takes place. As on the previous day, the German artillery stops for two hours. In total, almost 8,000 people managed to leave Warsaw, but most of them were sent to the concentration camps.

General Komorowski sees a growing threat of the complete destruction of the insurgent forces in Warsaw. He, therefore, reports to London: “The situation in Śródmieście-North is deteriorating. A soldier's endurance at the end of human abilities […] We are losing a lot of land. We are crowded into smaller and smaller islands ... If the defense of Downtown-North is broken, people and soldiers may be slaughtered ”
