Saudi Aramco to buy stake in Polish refinery


Saudi Aramco will buy a stake in the refining subsidiary of Polish oil company Lotos, Lotos Asfalt.

In July 2020, the European Commission approved the acquisition of Grupa Lotos by PKN Orlen (Orlen) under the condition that certain divestments are carried out. Both, Lotos and Orlen, are controlled by the Polish state.

The price in the preliminary agreement for the shares in Lotos Asfalt to be paid by Aramco, set at approximately EUR 243 million.

Additionally, Orlen has signed a long-term contract with Saudis for the supply of crude oil in the amount of 200 to 337 thousand. barrels a day. Orlen is counting on further acquisitions, it also hopes for development in cooperation with Saudi Aramco.

"You can achieve a lot with such a partner. And for Saudi Aramco Poland becomes an important partner in Europe. This shows that Russia does not need to have a monopoly position in our region, using it for political and military blackmail. With its business activities, PKN ORLEN is also solidly strengthening Poland's position in the European Union."
