Green light for Abrams for Poland. Cost: up to $6 billion

The US State Department has approved the sale of 250 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 tanks to Poland. The maximum transaction amount is USD 6 billion.

Poland received approval for the FMS purchase of 250 M1A2 Abrams SEP v3 tanks, 26 M88A2 Hercules technical protection vehicles, and 17 M1110 Joint Assault self-propelled bridges.

The purchase covers a total of 20 thousand pieces of combat ammunition - cumulative and programmable, and over 13.5 thousand pieces of training munition.

The total estimated value of the transaction is USD 6 billion. The final amount may be smaller because the notification to Congress always includes the maximum packages. The US Congress now has 15 days to oppose the sale, though that is unlikely.

The contractors will be General Dynamics (tank manufacturer), BAE Systems (manufacturer of technical support vehicles), Leonardo DRS (supplier of self-propelled bridges) as well as Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.
