The Russians have one goal: to wipe out Mariupol from the face of the earth, along with all its inhabitants, said Vadym Boychenko, the mayor of the city, in Saturday's interview with the news agency, the 'Unian.'
"This is simply genocide (...) There is no other word for it," - said Boychenko.
He stressed that the aggressor's army ruthlessly stood against all the inhabitants of Mariupol, including ethnic Russians. He informed that Ukrainian forces are "heroically resisting" and are repelling Russian attacks.
According to the municipal authorities, 2,187 civilians died in the city. "I can say that this number has risen significantly in recent hours," said Boychenko, without providing exact data. Half of the 540,000 inhabitants of Mariupol have been evacuated so far.
