Toll-free highways in Poland

From July 1st, free travel on sections of state motorways managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) comes into force. Exemption from tolls applies to drivers of passenger cars and motorcycles.

According to the justification of the government's bill, the purpose of abolishing tolls for state motorways is to maintain or increase citizens' communication possibilities and reduce the actual expenses incurred by drivers of passenger cars.

According to the Ministry of Infrastructure estimates, because of the resignation from tolling motorways from passenger car drivers, revenue from tolls will decrease by approximately PLN 200 million annually, or 2.5 percent of the revenues of the National Road Fund.

The amendment also introduces a ban on trucks passing each other on expressways. Such maneuver will be allowed when the vehicle being passed is "moving at a speed much lower than the speed limit".
