Preliminary results from a study in Wuhan showed that nearly half of the patients who got Covid-19 had various types of cardiovascular disease. Up to 70 percent of the patients that died had such symptoms.
Many factors contribute to the severe course of infection. The majority of patients who suffer from cardiovascular diseases are elderly, and thus their immune system functions worse. However, that this is also due to the fact that the virus itself attacks the heart.
The very infection of the virus in people who do not even have cardiovascular diseases can cause such damage to the heart that the left ventricular ejection fraction decreases very much and patients must be treated as in the course of acute inflammation of the heart muscle. The fact that COVID-19 damages myocardial cells is unfortunately confirmed - said the president of the Polish Society of Cardiology.
