Poland Plans Strengthening Military Amid Russia, Belarus Threats

Polish deputy prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Minister of Defense (MoD), Mariusz Błaszczak, have proposed legislation to radically strengthen the country’s military capabilities amid pressure from neighboring Belarus and Russia.

The defense proposal recommends an increased number of troops to protect the nation’s territory, from the current 110,000 to 250,000 soldiers and 50,000 reservists. However, Kaczynski clarifies that increasing the number of soldiers would not mean reinstituting compulsory national service.

"We estimate that each year we will have about 15-20 thousand people willing to voluntarily join the military," says MoD in an interview on the changes planned in connection with the planned law on the defense of the homeland.

"A strong military is the basic foundation of any country. Soldiers and candidate soldiers have been waiting for the new law since the fall of communism. It's high time not to talk about the law that was created in 1967 when you think about military regulations. Time for modernity in the Polish Army. Thanks to the joint work of the Ministry of National Defense, the Committee for National Security and Defense Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, and with the cooperation of the military community, we have managed to develop solutions that will change the face of the Polish Armed Forces. The assumptions of the changes were consulted with the Presidential Palace," said Błaszczak.

The homeland defense bill would address the deteriorating international situation and the problems presented by Poland’s geopolitical location.

In his speech, Kaczynski said that Poland must have a strong deterrent force to defend itself without dependence on allies, especially since the country lies on the eastern flank of the EU and NATO.

'If we want to avoid the worst, that is war, we must act according to the old rule - "if you want peace, get ready for war."
