Alyaksandr Lukashenka signed an amendment to the Belarusian penal code, which stipulates that "attempting to carry out a terrorist act" is punishable by death. The independent website Nasha Niva points out that in Belarus, many political prisoners have allegations of "terrorism" in one way or another.
The amendments will enter into force on May 29. The new version of the Criminal Code extends the possibility of using the death penalty, which is carried out by shooting in Belarus.
The House of Representatives announced that the bill was intended to "stop the activity of destructive elements and demonstrate the state's resolute fight against terrorist activities." Details of the planned changes have not been published.
