Borowski has suffered a stroke, is battling cancer, and yet, according to the court, he must go to prison for the words he spoke about Giertych.

The news of the verdict sparked widespread public outrage. Opposition figures from the communist era, as well as politicians and lawyers, came to Borowski's defense. Even the Minister of Justice, Waldemar Żurek, admitted today that "imprisonment should not be used as a punishment for expressing opinions."
