Poland celebrates the 45th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements

On August 31, 1980, the August Agreements were signed between the emerging Solidarity Trade Union and the Communist government of Poland.

The Strike Committee, representing approximately 800 shops and workplaces on the Gdańsk Coast, formulated 21 demands of a freedom, labor, and economic nature. Among the demands were the possibility of establishing independent trade unions, which later helped collapse communism in Eastern Europe.

Today, a ceremonial meeting of the Gdańsk Regional Board of the NSZZ "Solidarity" Trade Union took place in the historic BHP Hall of the Gdańsk Shipyard, with the participation of, among others, President Karol Nawrocki.

At the beginning of his speech marking the 45th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements, the President thanked the heroes of Solidarity for enabling him to live in a free Poland. He emphasized that in August 1980, at the BHP Hall, "something exceptional happened, something that generations of Poles have been waiting for."

"Today, Poland thanks those hundreds of thousands and millions who stood on the right side of the August 1980 Revolution. We will continue to stand up for them," he declared.

"Solidarity refused to be confined to a museum. This isn't just about the anniversary and national memory. In contemporary Poland, we must continue to sear our homeland and the globe with our conscience, recalling the values ​​that brought Solidarity victory," he said.

"Unfortunately, even today in Poland, we live in times when those who fought for our freedom, who took risks, who were imprisoned and interned, often live worse lives than those who fought against (our) freedom."

President Nawrocki vetoed the wind farm bill

Today, the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, announced his decision to veto the wind farm law.

Poland not represented in today's meeting in Washington

On Polish Army Day, the Polish embassy in Italy "forgot" about the Polish war cemetery at Monte Cassino

Today is Polish Army Day, the day Soviet army was defeated in a Battle of Warsaw

August 15th marks the anniversary of Poland's victory in the Battle of Warsaw in 1920. On this day, Poland celebrates Polish Army Day. Traditionally, the culmination of the celebrations is a military parade involving approximately 4,000 soldiers and 300 pieces of equipment. 

This year, for the first time, the land and air parade was supplemented by Navy ships. A parallel naval parade was held on the Baltic Sea, near the Hel (yes, Hel - pronounced "hell") Peninsula. 

The parade is attended by the most important representatives of the authorities, headed by the President of the Republic of Poland.

Russians will conduct large-scale military exercises near the Polish border

 While the world awaits the Trump-Putin talks, Putin is preparing massive maneuvers.

Belarus and Russia will hold joint military exercises "Zapad 2025" from September 12 to 16, the Belarusian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday.

According to Belarus, approximately 13,000 soldiers will participate in the exercises, but Western analysts estimate the actual number could exceed 100,000, similar in size to the exercises right before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. 

Ukrainian intelligence agencies warn that Russia has already deployed several hundred soldiers and dozens of pieces of equipment to Belarus. The "Zapad 2025" scenario is said to be inspired by the current military and political situation and experiences from the front in Ukraine.

Simulations of the use of tactical nuclear weapons and medium-range ballistic missiles will not be ruled out.

Foreign military attachés, including representatives of nine NATO countries, were invited to observe the maneuvers.

"Giant theft of public money," one of the biggest scandals since 1989

 Yesterday, a massive scandal erupted in Poland over subsidies awarded to hospitality businesses (hotels and restaurants) under the European Recovery Fund (KPO), to rebuild economies after the COVID-19 shutdown. 

The money was delayed until now because Poland was governed by an EU sceptic party, Law and Justice. 

It emerged that many companies received substantial funding (sometimes exceeding PLN 500,000) for company yachts, saunas, solariums, furniture replacement, and the purchase of a virtual shooting range. Most of the businesses receiving subsidies are run by family members of Civic Platform (PO) politicians.

Law and Justice politicians spoke about the massive scandal surrounding the European Recovery Fund (KPO) during a press conference today.

"This is one of the biggest scandals since 1989, because it involves pointless spending of public funds on luxury items without any control or verification. Where does the KPO money go? 400,000 PLN goes to a company registered at an address where a swingers' club is located..." - said MEP Tobiasz Bocheński.

He emphasized that "not only is this a matter that we will thoroughly investigate, but we will also check the map of these expenses to verify the beneficiaries of these funds and determine the answer to the question - are the people who received funding linked to contributions to Civic Coalition or to Rafal Trzaskowski's (presidential)campaign?"

Civic Coalition politicians are attempting to defend those who received funds, but are making things worse. For example, MP Katarzyna Królak staunchly defended her party colleague, millionaire MP Artur Łącki, by pointing out that "half or even most of her friends, extended family, and immediate family also received funding under the KPO program."

President Nawrocki signed his first legislative initiative

Komisja Nadzoru Izby Reprezentantów wezwała byłego prezydenta Billa Clintona i byłą sekretarz stanu Hillary Clinton do złożenia zeznań dotyczących Jeffreya Epsteina.

PM Tusk did not commemorate the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising
